Change is Good

It's time to get rid of my old logo/banner above. I'll miss it, but change is good.

Originally, it was never meant to last more than a month. A few years back I was counting down to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull here and made the banner in theme just for fun. Before too long I became very attached to it and started using variations for my portfolio site and other self promo stuff. I decided to leave it be for the Raiders' 30th blog-a-thon as I doodled and thought about new ideas.

In the next few weeks the blog's look may change daily as I experiment with possible logos and layouts. I still want to have something that can be used for all my self promo stuff. At this point I'm leaning more towards a "steampunk" old world look, but hoping to explore many other themes before it's done.

Here are some really rough concepts so far...

  1. Booo! I love the banner you have now. It's become an Icon! Don't change it!!!

  2. Thanks Rob, calling it an icon is a too nice a compliment, but it has been up there long enough to become one I guess. I still like it, so who knows? Maybe I'll just end up reworking it a bit. Still want to play around with new ideas though.

  3. Okay, I'll let you change it, but it's got to have the same sort of fun and spunk the current one has. I love your work Dave, but these samples are oh so...unexciting.

C'mon! Get going on some cool stuff! We're waiting! ;>

  4. Nice, this is sort of like a internet "crit". LOL. Please keep opinions coming.

Ghoulish, you're right these are unexciting aren't they?

  5. Awww...I have to blow the dust off my graphics degree and throw my design & artsy-fartsy two cents in: I love the current banner and think it represents you as YOU , as a brand, what you do, your personality, etc. perfectly!! I HATE the all text logos---blech! They are so not you (from what I know of you via posts, art, comments, etc.)! Your illustrations (in current banner)say a lot about you- they are both casual in style yet very neat and orderly and VERY well drawn and well laid out. I'd take off exclamation point, change font underneath and contrast color of "Dave Lowe Design" and background more for a logo/brand.Maybe make facial expression more sneaky/smart...looking to side but with a sly look. Just something to chew on & think about....

  7. I too love your current banner, but I'm also wanting to change my blog layout, so I know what you mean!

I love the steampunk idea! I chose the name Dismal Trader because at first I thought I'd write up fictional pieces on the props I made and have a story to each and everyone and almost be like a procurer of antiquities that collected oddities from around the world.. that hasn't panned out, yet! I made a copper and brass lamp inspired by a steam punk website and since then I've been hooked!

The first banner seems like it's going in the right direction :) The rest are better than anything I can do, but look too conformed and all your creativity, imagination and inspiration are anything but!!

You have a monumental task at hand, Mr. Lowe! Choose WISELY! :) I'm sure whatever you make everyone will love and even start to duplicate :)

  8. I personally like the gentleman in the drawer one myself. Needs a bit more over-the-topness to it.

I like your current banner because it's has humor, irony and a bit of mischief thrown in.

  9. Thanks for all the notes everyone. It's good to get other P.O.V's. Designing something yourself that represents yourself is always an odd challenge.

  10. If you must change, I personally like the second one with the Boogie Man climbing out of the drawer. Seems to suit the mindset behind your comics.
HOWEVER, I agree with the folks that say leave it alone. The current image is hilarious!

  11. I've lurked around here about 2 years now & have to say I'm also rather attached to the current logo. It's always said to me, "HA! Dave can take on whatever life OR work throws at him!" Of the new I like Mr. Creepy in the drawer, but it doesn't seem to say enough to me. I most like the crate looking one on bottom, but would probably add a pry bar to it. It kind of says, "Let's crack it open & see what we've got."

  12. Love the current banner...I say leave it until we celebrate Indy's 40th anniversary.

  13. I'd prefer you kept the banner you have, but I also like the bottom one of the new ones you're considering. But find a way to put yourself into it!

Of course, new banner or old, you have a wonderful blog.

  14. One more thing...your new banner must have a hot glue gun and T-square...thinking a steampunk glue gun...ok, maybe not.

  15. Anonymous, yeah I like the Boogie Man one too, I think a possible idea that I might expand on adding more characters.

Anonymous the 2 year lurker: That's an interpretation of the old logo that makes me want to keep it. CURSE YOU! But my ego thanks you.

Stolloween, I did think it would be Temple of Doom's 30th in just a few years and I could just leave it. Oh and thanks for now making me obsess over what a "steampunked" t-square would look like!

Max, when a blogger of your reputation says he prefers the old logo, it hits me like a guillotine blade to the neck... oh jeez... I'm so sorry, I didn't mean that to remind you of...never mind.

  16. As a designer I'm always re-doing stuff, you just get bored of looking at it, you want something new. I was thinking if you took the name and did it like a project, duct tape and screws holding the letters up and what not, maybe one letter is slimed.
