Ted lowe is my little brother. I despise him.
Just look at that picture above, so smug...such a wannabe hollywood actor headshot. Guess what! When this picture was taken , he was probably thinking ..."man, I wish I was at my brother Dave's...he's got that cool Mace Windu lightsaber that lights up and makes real movie sounds or maybe he has some some frosted flakes I could eat because this actor's life leaves me hungry!".
He is my younger by 2 years. He has far more courage, ambition, intelligence and charm than I would ever hope to have. He's also just a flat out funny guy and someone you miss when he leaves the room. Someone who really listens when you share your secrets or busts ya when your full of yourself. Friends of mine who had only met him briefly ask about and remember him, for this reason alone...I wish he was never born.
Hate aside, I must inform anyone who reads this blog to go to (when visiting or if now in L.A.) the Unknown Theater. My Brother has given much of his time believing in and helping to get off the ground. This past 2 years...he has spent almost every night, seven days a week being a part of this company.
Go see a show. You can "TeVo" American Idol , Lost or 24.

Truth is, I am guilt ridden. Please go see a show...if I was a good older brother I would of forced him to pick a career with security and a good pension.
My friend Bill.
My friend Bill once had a band. It was a raise your hands with devil horn fingers kind of band. LOVECRAFT was the name, Bill was the drummer. They played many a show in and around the L.A. bar scene. Bill often mentioned I should do a CD cover for them. A demented jester was to be their "Eddie" of Iron Maiden fame. The band broke up.
Behold this study/sketch of the heavy metal goodness that could of been.
The broken doll head means nothing...just thought it gave it a certain head banging...je ne sais quoi.

St. Patrick's Day 2006
To weed or not to weed..that is the question of this post. The shamrocks, clovers or whatever you want to call them pictured above and below are from my own yard. I love them. They are reminders of life back east and Irish heritage.
I'm in a current debate. A certain person I live with, that will remain unknown, says they are weeds. I say a good looking and easy growing potential ground cover.
I also love the way they grow in the cracks of the concrete patio, I think gives a mystic worn and ancient feel to something so urban.
I'd welcome any comment as to weed or not to weed.
Star Wars Cartoons 1
A long time ago in a one bedroom apartment in Burbank... My long dormant fanatic love for all things Star Wars was awakened with the release of the Special Editions in 1996. After the release of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, I discovered the thousands of Star Wars fan sites on the web. I enjoyed theforce.net . They had a humor page and for the heck of it I submitted a cartoon and it was posted.
I had alot of fun for a year or so submitting more every once in awhile. It was like being in 1977 sitting in 6th grade filling looseleaf pages doodling X-wing fighters or Darth Vader and passing them to my buddy's.
Below are some of the cartoons I did. I warn you, this is gonna be really geeky. You really have to know the movies to get a few of these..sorry

Knitty Gritty secrets.
People ask me all the time...
"So Dave, you worked on DIY's hit show Knitty Gritty. You worked with the queen bee knitter Vickie Howell and all the members of the Austin Craft Mafia on DIY's Stylelicious premiering in April. What tips can you give me.. a first time knitter?"
Here's a step by step sweater project full of "insider" tips from us "behind the scene" pros to make people like Vickie and the guests on Knitty Gritty look good.
Step One- materials.
It's best to use yarn. It turns out using embroidery thread is bad so that explained alot of my initial problems knitting for the first time.
For guys I suggest picking out really cool and huge knitting needles because you know the old saying..."the bigger the knitting needle...."
Step 2- basic knit pattern
Here is my "insider tip". Using the needles is just showing off. Knitting is just a series of fancy knots. Throw away the needles and started knotting.
Step 3- it's starting to come together.
Forget step 2. Making the fancy knots is hard and it gets messy. It's best to just focus on making the rows. A sweater is, after all, just row after row of fancy knots. No one really looks at the fancy knots. So focus on making rows of yarn.
First, untangle everything from step 2 and loop the yarn between stuff. A doorknob and desk lamp works good.
Next bunch 20-25 strands of yarn with "zip ties" available at any home improvement store.
Step 4- a finished sweater.
Ok, just forget steps 2 and 3. A real waste of time. Go and buy 75 balls of yarn in your favorite color and lot's of extra hot glue sticks.
Hot glue all the balls of yarn to an old sweater in the closet.
Well, there you go... a beautiful hand made sweater to keep you warm and be the envy of all your friends.

....and the winner is....
Now that the "oscars" are over I was thinking about all the awards I have won...
...well... the one award.
Every October in Scarsdale, N.Y. where I grew up, there was the annual Halloween Window Painting Contest. It was a big event that kick started the halloween season. Kid's from 3rd to 10th grade from anywhere in town could paint a small section of the various store windows in the downtown village. I entered for 5 years in a row and never even earned an honorable mention. Then in 1980 (the last year I was eligible) I won the $100.00 grand prize.
It really was a big deal for me then. To this day I still display my trophy.
I made the local paper too. My Mom like some rabid Hollywood agent or publicist within seconds after we saw it called the paper with the correct spelling of my last name and to inform them I went to IONA Prep and not Scarsdale High as they mentioned. The Inquirer was very nice to print a correction in the next week's issue, even though I was sure they would print the headline..."Furious Mother corrects newspaper editors and causes Grand Prize to be revoked".

As only a Mom would, she states...when this part of my history comes up in family story telling...that in all our years living in Scarsdale, my window (at the time) was the only one to be printed on the front page - above the fold.
A true fact?...I don't know, but when I have kid's one day ....I'm gonna tell it like Mom.
A critique of my work 26 years later:
I still have trouble with anatomy.
Whats with the candy cane?
Who gets candy canes trick or treating?
Why did I give the kid such a huge round head?
I wanna go back in time and slap myself while painting it for it's obvious problems....on second thought...I would of slapped back and caused some "time-line" issues and then maybe never have won... so forget the whole "go back in time" thing.
Now ...check out the quality and mature level of painting by Hanna Zornow, the 2003 winner...wow!
Click on or go to...http://www.scarsdale.com/recreation/halloween2003.asp
I would love to link to winners of ' o4, '05 and '06 but I can't find. Maybe it's for the best because this 2003 winner makes my win look sad.
